Assisi (Pg). Although already steeped in centuries of history, from May 6th to 8th Assisi will be turning back the clocks 500 years with a series of processions in period costume, dancers, musicians playing on Medieval instruments, archers and other street entertainers livening up the ancient streets and squares.
The entire Calendimaggio is in fact a build-up to a contest that has been going on just about for ever, between the factions of the Parte de Sotto and the Parte de Sopra, when Assisi was riven with the internal strife between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines. The opening ceremony is held in the Basilica of St Francis’ for the Parte de Sotto and in the Cathedal of San Rufino for the Parte de Sopra, while in the Piazza del Comune the Maestro di Campo assumes full power in the city for the duration of the event. The actual contest between the two factions consists in a series of Medieval jousting and games.
