Calendimaggio in Assisi

Assisi (PG) - From May 3rd to 5th Assisi will be returning to the opulence of its Medieval past with the annual Calendimaggio pageant. Besides being of pagan derivation from a festivity associated with the fertility rites of spring, the Calendimaggio also echoes the historic moment in which Assisi began to develop internal rivalries between its two factions - the Parte de Sopra and the Parte de Sotto, which respectively upheld the causes of the Guelphs and the Ghibellines in the struggle between Empire and Church that devastated much of italy in the 14th century. Revived after centuries of neglect in 1927 by the city's podestà Arnaldo Fortini, the Calendimaggio as it runs today is the fruit of historical research carried out on the city's ancient archives.
