Orvieto (TR) - It is celebrated on Sunday, June 8, 2014 in Piazza Duomo, the feast of Palombella, historical representation for the feast of Pentecost. On the base of the cupola of the church of San Francesco di Orvieto, in front of the Duomo, lies the Empyrean depicting a kiosk smoking while on the steps of the Cathedral is located a Gothic tabernacle depicting the Last Supper.
At noon, the tolling of the bell of Mauritius, the bishop shaking a white linen from the balcony of the palace of the Opera del Duomo and the Empyrean depart fireworks, while a white dove descends towards the tabernacle along a wire rope. Thousand bangs, so goes the story, fill the square and spread from the surrounding countryside. The dove is then entrusted by the Bishop, as a sign of peace and fertility, the last married couple who had celebrated the wedding in the Cathedral, with the task to cure it until its natural death.
Between the sacred and the profane, the historical descent of Palombella, founded in the fifteenth century by a noblewoman of Monaldeschi family, there is all the popular belief: the outcome of the ceremony drew omens for the crop year. Throughout the city there is an air of celebration because Palombella is considered the feast of Orvieto.
