SOUVENIR D'AFRIQUE_Opere contemporary West African collection by Ryan

Trevi (PG) - One of the most important collections of Italian contemporary art produced in West Africa for the first time on display at Palazzo Lucarini. The exhibition opens Saturday, September 7, at 19:00.

The works were collected by the Australian artist known in the course of a long association in Africa, especially with the western part of the continent. However, more than a collection Ryan prefers to speak of "collective work". Not a manufactured aesthetically autonomous, then, but the fruit of long experience - existential as well as artistic - grown over time and space, during his stay in two countries as diverse as the English-speaking and French-speaking Ghana Ivory Coast . This is therefore a visual narrative, which also tells of the life and relationships of Virginia Ryan and met with artists who emerged in the last decade.

In some cases, the ninety-renowned artists such as Frederic Bruly Bouabre (present at the Venice Biennale this year), or the Grand pears modern art of Benin, the recently deceased Cyprien Tokoudagba. Or, again, Samir Stenka, the artist of Bingerville, with an archive of over twenty thousand drawings in his house-museum. They, in Palazzo Lucarini dialogue with artists from the younger generation, for example the Ghanaian Wemega Rikki-Kwawu, or Mathilde Moreau, from Abidjan and so on. Common trait, the fact still live and work in West Africa: street artists and self-taught alongside more established artists or academics. Contacts are experienced firsthand. Bonds of friendship and respect, and with younger artists and deserving pupils, even economic support.

The title of the exhibition, Souvenir d'Afrique, emphasizes precisely this value of memory. A memory of important moments and shared, playing intelligently with the cliché of exoticism, in getting in front of an extremely rich and varied artistic reality, where the call identity is only a perceptive short circuit and not an assessment of the update culture of those lands. On the occasion of the inauguration will be attended by representatives of the Embassy of Ghana and the Ivory Coast.
